Leader of Government Business McKeeva Bush stated in a press conference yesterday that income tax and property tax are not options to resolve Cayman’s financial crisis.

He stated ‘Property tax and income tax. To go this route would change the uniqueness of these islands’ economic base.’

To cover the deficit government are seeking private partners to upgrade Owen Roberts International Airport, develop a new sewage system, build a cruise ship facility, and improve roads.

On September 1 government’s operating bank account was overdrawn by CI$4.3 million, with a limit of CI$15 million. Cash outflows during September are likely to be around CI$79 million with revenues of only CI$30 million.

To meet its obligations government needs to borrow around CI$ 40 million. In order to do this it needs the approval of the United Kingdom Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

On Monday 7 September government is due to present plans to the UK outlining proposals to cut spending and increase revenues. They hope to then receive approval to borrow the money they need to pay government salaries and other expenditure.

Last month government was unable to pay employee healthcare and pension costs.

Minister of Tourism Charles Clifford has announced that construction work on the redevelopment of Owen Roberts International Airport is scheduled to commence in September and will be complete by 2012.

The project was first announced at the start of 2007 and should have been completed next year. Delays have meant that only a new staff parking lot and a reconfiguration of the long and short-term passenger parking areas have so far been finished.

The next stage will see the floor space at the main terminal grow from 80,000 to 220,000 square feet, an expanded ticketing and check-in hall, a new arrivals hall, a domestic arrivals and departures hall, a new international departures hall, a three additional aircraft parking slots.

Minister of Tourism Charles Clifford has announced that the national carrier Cayman Airways will, subject to regulatory approval, begin direct fights between Grand Cayman and New York’s JFK International Airport on June 23 2007. More than 30% of visitors to the Cayman Islands come from the New York Area. He said, ‘The data clearly indicates how important the Northeast market is to our tourism industry. I commend the Board and Management of Cayman Airways for responding to this demand with the introduction of the New York route. As we have stated in the past, one of the key roles of our National Airline is to support the Islands as an engine of economic growth. I am therefore extremely pleased to see the industry come together in this fashion. Moreover, I am confident our local residents will enjoy the convenience of the non-stop service for leisure, cultural and shopping opportunities in the Big Apple.’
