Taxes & Tipping

Taxes

There is no income, sales, inheritance or capital gains tax in the Cayman Islands. Government raises money by levying import duty on virtually all imported goods and adding 10% to your hotel bill.

Tipping

It is quite common for restaurants in Grand Cayman to automatically add a 15% service charge to bills. This is not legally enforceable and should be disputed if service is not up to scratch.

Hotels will typically service charge of up to 10% to the final bill.

For other services, the following tips are considered reasonable:

  • Dive and fishing boat crew - $10-$20
  • Taxi drivers – 10-15% of the fare
  • Housekeepers - $2 per day
  • Porters - $1-$2 per bag

Tipping should be a reward for good service. It’s not about avoiding social disapproval.
